AUSTIN HUMPHREYS
Photojournalist for the Coloradoan
Sitting off Riverside Ave in east Fort Collins is a two-story building with "Fort Collis Coloradoan" printed on the side of the building. What used to be a hub of local journalism run by the USA Today affiliated Coloradoan, has turned into yet another casualty of shrinking newsrooms. Coloradoan offices that used to span both floors are now constricted to just one floor - turning the building into a shared space with a local medical office. Within the newsroom, where 9News used to operate a satellite facility, now sit empty desks after network cutbacks.
Yet, despite these odds, working at his cluttered desk, sits Austin Humphreys. Once a member of a team of photographers, Humphreys now only works with one other photographer. Having worked at the Coloradoan for three years after moving to Colorado from Texas, Humphreys now works closely with the news team to cover stories from sporting events to breaking news. It was during one of these outings to cover a local story that I linked up with Austin for an afternoon. With the upcoming election, traffic and infrastructure is a hot topic and we were sent out to grab pictures of local traffic hot spots.
